BAKKEN FAMILY FISHING TRIP

We had a blast with the Bakken family the other day on the Green River. They did a great job landing several fish! We are excited about high water dropping (currently at around 5600 CFS) and have started to see some dry fly action. This weekend we landed a few on caddis and crickets- great to see the fish starting to eat up top! And below on the dry dropper worms are still working well (orange wire and chenille natural), and also prince nymphs. Enjoy!

HIGH WATER DANGERS- GREAT DRY FLY ACTION TO FOLLOW

Salt Lake Tribune and Channel 13 News both released stories today asking visitors on the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam to exercise caution during spring runoff flows. Several visitors have needed rescuing during the 8600 CFS flows, and with water temps in the 40’s hypothermia is a concern. Read the tribune story here.

Once the high water flows end the dry fly fishing is expected to EXCEPTIONAL. The fish are strong from fighting the powerful currents and are putting up a good fight. We look forward to their SLAM on some dries when the CFS stabilizes to average summer flows. If you were jonesing for the (absent) Cicada hatch this year – the dry fly fishing to come could give you that top of the water eat you were looking for. Contact fishingwithnick@gmail.com to book ASAP- we still have some dates open!

SCUDS ARE THE FLY OF CHOICE

The fish are tight to the banks, and on sand bars in the slower water. With the strong flows, you’ll need to hit bottom to reach the fish on their level. Here’s a first hand look at some of the scuds the trout are feeding on.

Scud

Try gray or amber in size 20-14. Also worms are still doing well- try a neon nightmare or wire worm in red, pink, natural, or orange with a scud trailer.

HIGH WATER FLOWS CONTINUE- FISHING STILL GOOD

High water flows have been extended approximately 10 days longer than expected, but that’s not stopping the good nymphing! The trout are in search of junk food! Try a worm, scud, or egg for some good underwater action.

Don’t let the lack of the almighty cicada get you down- it’s still one of the prettiest and most abundant fisheries in the west! Fish on Jenny.

Jenny Ouellette

Doug Ouellette and his wife Jenny of Reno, NV visited the Green last week and with the help of Guide Nick Jackson absolutely crushed it! 20 fish to the boat- during high water- nice job guys!

HIGH WATER FOR THE GREEN RIVER/FLAMING GORGE 2016

With the signal of the endangered razorback sucker larvae presence high water flows started last week on the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam, UT. The increased CFS will last one to two weeks eventually peaking at 8,600 CFS with current flows at 7,000 CFS. Read more about the flows from the Bureau of Reclamation here, and for current conditions from the U.S. Geological Survey click here.

The high water flows and the near absent cicada hatch thus far have the dry fly action at a low. Try nymphing with a worm, egg, or scud, or a huck a streamer!

RUNOFF SEASON- HIGH WATER

Ksl.com posted an article this morning about four great fishing spots to hit during spring runoff. The article focuses on the different types of waters to fish, and includes several locations under each type- with the green river being listed under their tail water section. It’s a good read and a great reference to some local areas for spring fishing. Read the whole article here.

Get out there and have fun! Be looking for Flaming Gorge Dam release of high water coming out soon- CFS expected to be between 4600 and 8600. The Bureau of Reclamation estimates high water to be in the next few weeks –“Larval emergence of razorback sucker are dependent upon both the Yampa River peak flow and the number of degree days above 14C in the Green River.  Scientists confirmed yesterday that the estimates remain for larval emergence to occur during the last week in May into the first week of June, although uncertainty exists and actual observed larvae will be used for the spring peak trigger.” Read the whole article here.

GREAT CICADA HATCH EXPECTED THIS YEAR IN THE NORTHEAST

The 17 year Cicada hatch is set to emerge in the Northeast this year. Looks like a few states are going to have some killer dry fly action! Hopefully we also get some love from our beloved clicky friend out west on the Green River, Utah.

This article has a great video on the behavior of the Cicada. Read about this interesting insect and the full Science Alert article here.
